Hello everyone,

I’m thrilled to announce the launch of my beginner group jazz guitar courses!

Learning jazz guitar can be overwhelming for beginners, and it can be difficult to know where to start. In our group classes, we'll focus on playing popular jazz standards. This will include learning everything you need to start playing and improvising over a jazz standard.

Course Structure

Each course consists of four classes spread over one month, focusing on a single jazz standard. Here’s the general flow for the classes:

Class 1: learning the chords and melody of the jazz standard

Class 2: learning how to improvise over the jazz standard

Class 3: Chord tones and making melodies with chord tones of the jazz standard

Class 4: Putting it all together (jam session class)

By the end of the course, you will understand how to play the chords, melody, and lightly improvise over the standard chosen for the month.

Which Jazz Standards will be used in class? This is the current schedule: October: Summertime

November: Autumn Leaves

December: Blue Bossa

Prerequisites

  • Familiarity with basic open chords (G, D, Am, etc.)

  • Helpful but not necessary: familiarity with the Major scale and minor pentatonic scale

Details

  • Fee: ¥15,000 per month

  • Lesson length: 55 minutes (5 minutes for setup/tuning, 45 minutes for class time, and 5 minutes for teardown)

  • Start date: Saturday, October 5th 2024 @ 1pm

Lessons will be held using a mix of Japanese and English.

Who Should Join: This course is perfect for beginners who have some basic guitar knowledge and are eager to explore jazz. Whether you're a hobbyist or looking to deepen your musical skills, these classes will provide a solid foundation.

What to Bring: Ensure you have your guitar, a tuner, and a notebook for taking notes. Sheet music and other materials will be provided.

Benefits of Group Learning: Group classes offer a supportive environment where you can learn from peers, share feedback, and stay motivated. Plus, it’s a great way to make new friends with similar musical interests. Group lessons in a jazz setting also creates a more realistic performance environment that you would experience in a jam session setting.

How do I sign up?

If you are a new student, apply for a free trial lesson here. (please note that weekends are currently extremely busy therefore it is often difficult to apply for a trial lesson on weekends. If you are having trouble finding an available slot, please e-mail me at r.boisselle@ontarioguitarstudio.com).

Let’s have fun developing your skills as a jazz guitarist! I look forward to meeting you!

-Ryan
